Debra Bell’s Community Networking and Leadership Profile

Having lived in Rotorua for 40 years has enabled me to develop strong networks and strategic alliances with local professionals, businesses and providers.

I have a personal interest in this community. My philosophy is to make a difference in the Rotorua Community through my involvement in various voluntary organizations. I am passionate about young people because they are our future! Facilitating the Inzone Road Show was an opportunity for Rob Hamill and Mark Inglis, role model speakers, to inspire our secondary school students.

Being a charter member of the Rotary Club of Rotorua Sunrise and President in 2000-2001 was a huge learning experience. Your true leadership skills are tested in a voluntary organization. Respect is earned, not demanded and I learned many valuable lessons.

I have served 3 years on the District 9930 membership development committee responsible for 53 clubs from Waihi to Te Awamutu to Taumarunui, Hawkes Bay, Gisborne to Tauranga. My role on this committee is to facilitate workshops throughout the district and train in-coming presidents and club officers in membership development and retention. Since June 2004 I am Chairman of this committee.

Other Community organizations I support include Business SWAP Rotorua, a business breakfast organization which energizes and inspires me on a weekly basis. Being immersed in a positive learning environment stretches you to push your boundaries, to set goals which scare you. I have spent 6 of 10 years on the local committee, 3 years on the National Executive, and was Co-Convenor of the International Convention held in Rotorua in October 2002, hosting 300 delegates. I received the SWAPer of the Year Award, for contributions to Geyser Swap Group in 1998 and again in 2003.

As coordinator of the “Magic Moments” programme, a community project to gather donated goods and gifts from local businesses and distribute to needy families in Rotorua at Christmas. This initiative was inspired by Anthony Robbins and over the past 6 years we have gifted to 292 families.

The above voluntary activities have formed the basis of my extensive network, both locally and nationally. The principles which I have applied as a volunteer can be learned by others and implemented in a business environment, hence my passion for sharing these strategies as an accomplished public speaker and workshop facilitator.

Professional Achievements
10 years management experience with Countrywide Bank, 10 years in private business as practice manager and director of Rotorua Precision Dental Laboratory Limited, which won the Best Customer Service Related Business Award in 2000. For the last two years I have been a Financial Adviser with AMP Pinnacle Financial Services Ltd. I was the top new Financial Advisor for the 2003 year, and received a merit award for new business production.

The next coup was an invitation to the 2004 AMP New Adviser Conference held at Waiheke Island where I facilitated and presented a workshop on “Networking Your Business”.

Other facilitation and workshop presentations include “Change Management” workshops for the Bay of Plenty Police Headquarters, and Managers of the Rotorua Police Station at the invitation of Gary Smith, the District Commander, Bay of Plenty.

In 2004 I have developed and presented Business Strategies workshops for Enterprise Training Programmes in Rotorua and Hamilton, and in 2004-2005 I am presenting a series of lectures at the University of Waikato.
