How do I get started networking?StartersRemember - people do business with people, not businesses. Ask yourself this question: "Why would anyone want to do business with me?" Be generous with your energy, time and resources. Become a volunteer, donor and supporter. Exchange five of your business cards per day for five new business cards per day. Show 'respect' for their card; look at it before you put it carefully away in your business card holder or Diary. Give away a referral every day. Arrive on time! Introduce yourself to strangers - something totally acceptable in a networking environment. Wear your nametag on the right hand side. When you shake hands with someone they will still be able to read your name without obstruction. Listen intently - 'be present' in conversations with everyone (2 ears, 1 mouth - use them in that proportion). Encourage and enjoy pauses - resist the temptation to speak first. Keep conversation light and interesting. Find out about the person you are speaking to. Remember their name! Even if they have no need for your goods or services they may know someone who does. Act interested and be positive. Ask open questions that require more than a yes or no answer. Follow up if you say you will. Most salespeople miss out on sales because they don't follow up. 90% of networking your business is done by JUST TURNING UP!!! |
